  At the May 16, 1898 Board meeting the subject of pay for the fire department was addressed. The board accepted a recommendation from the Police, Sanitary, Fire and Water Committee setting the pay rates: “Resolved, that the Fire Marshall be hereinafter paid Two Dollars for first hour of service and one dollar for each hour thereafter and that each Fireman be paid one dollar for first hour and fifty-cents for each hour thereafter and said Fire Marshall and firemen to be paid only for time of service when attending fires within the corporate limits of the Village of La Grange.”
