The Village Politics

From Chapter IV: 1891

The is little to discover about how the fire department developed in this time but it must have developed an organization in a short time, for on New Year’s Day of the next year the firemen “Despite the unpropitious contribution of the Weather Gods on New Year’s eve, the first annual ball of the La Grange Fire Department gave great satisfaction and unalloyed enjoyment to those who participated. Alderman Paul Shordiche introduced D. B. Lymann, Esq., who had the gratifying duty of presenting to the fire department a magnificent Fire Horn, duly inscribed as a token of appreciation for and goodwill towards our gallant fire fighters.”  Records show that at the time the Fire Chief was C. H. Roberts. This speaking horn is still in the possession of the La Grange Fire Department.
